Four Tet has dropped a new shimmering single called Baby, and it samples vocal snippets of UK pop star Ellie Goulding. It is the second single from his upcoming album, Sixteen Oceans, which will be released in March. All of his recent releases glisten with chopped up vocal samples and formulaic beats. Could this possibly be preluding to an easy listening album rather than the more experimental pieces of work he was known for back in his heyday?

Baby is an emotional soundscape created by the melodic master himself. The first half begins with textured beats that expand into somewhat harder rhythms you could hear on the dance floor. Then the beautiful ambient breakdown arrives. The sound of birds singing float amongst the glittery mid-tones that eventually transition into a harder and stronger ending. Baby is hypnotic and full of colorful patterns for a solid “feel-good” track.
