The smell of stale alcohol painted the fluorescent lit streets as the neon lights accented the faces of the different people wandering on Reeperbahn Straße. Reeperbahn Festival is about discovering new music, stumbling in and out of the wicked Hamburg venues, clubs and bars, and meeting loads of new people that are either there to make connections for their dope company or to befriend when you visit Hamburg again!

My favorite thing about Reeperbahn Festival was meeting locals that were eager to show us a good time. I met a couple guys of the Hamburg band, Swutscher, while drinking free beer at a Kegel event. We bonded instantly and later that night, met them at Komet Club for a night full of endless dancing to Motown and Funk records spun by the bar owner himself. Definitely check out the amazing sounds of Swutscher — LoFi country that has everyone in the room grooving. Not only were all of the locals fabulous and welcoming, they knew how to rock out in the crowd! There were tons of fun and safe mosh pits, people dancing crazy and everyone coming together to sing their favorite song.

Reeperbahn Festival showcased loads of amazing artists and bands. They brought bands and artists over from the UK that I’ve been wanting to see for months now, organized showcase events for different countries (i.e. Dutch and Australian bands), and had huge surprise acts that filled some of the biggest concert venues. Here are some of my favorite bands that I saw:

1.) The Regrettes / Facebook / Soundcloud / Instagram / Twitter

The American punk rock band from Los Angeles brought a high-energy set, with feminist fueled lyrics crushing today’s patriarchy and politics that surround them. As a band, they encourage authenticity and tell listeners to embrace their feelings through each banging tune of their latest album, Feel Your Feelings Fool! Packed into the sweaty upper level room of Molotow, the lead singer, Lydia, had the crowd wrapped around her finger from the beginning of the set. She got the entire room moshing, dancing and singing along even if people were just there to check out the band. At one point, they even got the entire room down to the floor singing, „Oh, baby baby,“ then when the drop came, everyone jumped as high as they could in the air as a safe and fun mosh pit shook the entire room.

2.) Yellow Days / Soundcloud / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram

George van den Broek’s raspy and soulful voice drew in a huge crowd to the main room of Molotow. Not only does his voice swoon his listeners over, but he enjoyed shining the spotlight on the sound of his soulful guitar with his smokey riffs and smooth solos. Read more about what he is all about in a previous blog post I wrote a few months back!

3.) Nilüfer Yanya / Facebook / Soundcloud / Twitter / Instagram

Pulling influences from artists like Amy Winehouse, Sade and Nina Simone, Nilüfer Yanya seamlessly incorporates her storytelling lyrics, indie guitar riffs, and soulful voice. Her voice blew me away live, just like it did the first time I ever listened to her and I had a grin from ear to ear as the jazzy beats and powerful lyrics hit me. 4.) Iguana Death Cult / Facebook / Soundcloud / Instagram

Roaring like thunder on a stormy day, Iguana Death Cult brought the afternoon crowd alive at the outdoor area in Molotow. The psych/garage band’s blazing guitars, fast tempo drums and surf influences guarantees for a crazy and high energetic show. Coming from The Netherlands, their loud set pulled influences from bands like King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Thee Oh Sees. Be sure to check out their latest album, The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life.

5.) Dream Wife / Facebook / Bandcamp / Twitter / Instagram

It’s been about a year since I discovered Dream Wife, so seeing them for the first time was an unforgettable experience. The energy that they carry throughout the entire set is inspiring – the three girls vibe off of each other in a way that makes you feel like you are part of their girl gang. Their songs are full of catchy guitar riffs, a powerful bassline and lyrics that make any women feel empowered.
