My love tells me I’m a mess
I couldn’t get the car to start
I left my keys somewhere in the mess.”
–Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales
Will Toledo sits next to me and begins to sing the lyrics of Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales whilst the synths quietly accompany the beautiful intro of the song. Then his dreamy guitar swoops in with the classic Car Seat Headrest guitar riffs that sounds ever so perfect.
Toledo is not actually sitting next to me—Car Seat Headrest’s music just makes it feel as if he is. The great thing about Car Seat Headrest is the personal connection you feel when you put your headphones in and listen to the stories Toledo intertwines throughout the songs of the most recent album, Teens of Denial. He creates the perfect bedroom rock/indie rock tone that creates the distinctive Car Seat Headrest sound.
From the genius opening track Fill in the Blank, to the 11-minute ballad The Ballad of the Costa Concordia, or the anthem Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales, Car Seat Headrest creates songs with relatable lyrics and bedroom rock/indie rock sounds that stand out upon the rest in the music world. The front of Car Seat Headrest is the inspiring lyricist and fantastic guitar player, Will Toledo. Not only does his creativity shine through the recent album Teens of Denial, but also in the previous album, Teens of Style. He is an inspiring artist creating music “participating in the musical culture as it stands,” he says in a past Noisey article. He goes on to explain:
